Naresh Trehan

Naresh Trehan always desired to become a doctor. He was born in the historic city of Batala in Punjab, to a gynecologist for a mother and an ENT specialist for a father. At King George Medical College in Lucknow, he completed his MBBS, realizing his aspiration. Dr. Trehan was superior to everyone else.

He relocated to the United States and began employment at the Grossman School of Medicine in New York. He gained recognition in the Indo-US community for his coronary bypass operation and gained respect. Trehan still desired to return to India, though.

He returned to India in 1988 and, along with HP Nanda, founded the Escorts cardiac Institute and Research Centre, the country’s first cardiac institute. In September 2006, Fortis Healthcare paid Rs 650 CR for a 90% interest in the enterprise because it was so successful. However, Dr. Trehan was still mulling over something.

His goal was to establish a medical center that would lead the way in providing high-quality treatment and research. He opened a super-specialty hospital with 1250 beds on 43 acres in Gurgaon, Haryana, in 2009. The birth of Medanta
His concept was straightforward. Construct Medanta according to the Mayo Clinic paradigm, in which a team of physicians and paramedics oversees all super specialty teams on a single platform. Still, he had a concept and understood that the model needed to be properly priced to survive in India.

He reduced the operation cost from the global average of Rs 40 Lakhs to Rs 3.2 lakh by combining traditional Ayurvedic herb medications. In addition, he trained physicians who worked full-time to become specialists. As it grew to generate $1200 in revenue

Aside from price, Medanta expanded thanks to strong foundations. Compared to Apollo and Fortis, which had an enterprise value per bed of Rs 1.4 CR, its value was Rs 2.8 CR. In 2015, it inaugurated a second 160-bed hospital in Indore, complete with four operating rooms, a cath lab, five ICUs, and 64 ICU beds.

Dr. Trehan launched a medical value travel model with integrated insurance and bilingual support after realizing that 16% of his patients were foreign citizens. The major moment came the following year, as it scaled to 10,000 annual patients from over 100 countries and had a revenue of 1478.16 CR by 2021.

Medanta listed on the stock market on November 16, 2022, following a 9,58-times oversubscription of its 2,205.57 CR initial public offering. It expanded to 4 hospitals, 2467 beds, 30 specialties, 1,300 specialists, and a unicorn valued at 8,880 CR.

As of right now, Medanta has 3349 CR in revenue and 478 CR in profit. With 5 hospitals, 3841 beds, 650 ICUs, and more, it now treats more than 25 lakh patients a year. It’s valued at 29,937 CR.

Padma Bhushan Dr. Naresh Trehan continues to provide free medical care to over 48,190 patients each year, worth 38.9 CR.
